The Facts
“Over 23% of Children in Montcalm and Gratiot counties live under the national poverty level”, according to Michigan League for Human Services, In 2010, 23.5 percent of Michigan children lived in poverty and Michigan’ child poverty rate has increased by more than 50 percent since 2000. Child poverty in Michigan has grown faster than the national average and is the highest in the Midwest. Poverty in Michigan was 16.8 percent in 2010 and child poverty was 23.5 percent. Total poverty and child poverty have grown by over 50 percent over the past 10 years and Michigan’ family poverty rate is the third fastest growing in the nation. One of the most alarming statistics is the increase! It is unfathomable, but more than 31,000 children in Michigan are homeless and more than 700,00 are on food assistance.
